Think of adding on rather than switching!

Marvin Arnold at MIT has a great suggestion that could work especially in situations that are not extremely strcutured. His thought is rather than have a formal conversation about switching groups, it might be more prudent to speak to your manager about your interests/the kind of projects you would love to work on- and assess if it will be alright for you to reach out to other groups to see if there is a project you can work with them on. So going ahead with your manager's support is the way to go. So making sure your manager is aware of what you are doing/is OK with it is critical! And definitely making sure you are able to handle the additional responsibilities is super critical!! Because you cannot let your current group down when it comes to deliverables. And you certainly don't want to take on something additional and fall short with that- because that can be counter productive.
