A little prep doesn't hurt.

SchrautRayden Llano from Stanford says it is important to be relaxed when starting a conversation- and one way to try and ensure that is to be prepared and "make sure that you have something to discuss". Particularly if you are meeting with a senior executive, do some research on them to learn more about their career path and focus. You may be successful in finding an interesting bit of information to bring to the conversation. It is important that you don't go up to talk to them without having something intelligent to say- because then you can be nervous or uncomfortable- and the conversation can become awkward.
